If you sometimes visit to Kolkata you will find there is place in the heart of the city named “BBD Bagh”, which was earlier (before independence) known as Dalhousie Square. These BBD is the
abbreviation of the three heroes, three brave sons of India who sacrificed their life for the freedom of India.

  • Benoy Krishna Basu (B)

  • Badal Gupta (B)

  • Dinesh Gupta (D).

In 1930 the cruel Inspector General Col. NS Simpson was the target of this trio. Col. Simpson was famous for his brutal torture on the prisoners specially on the freedom fighters. The trio decided to take revenge by launching an attack on him. On 8 December, 1930 Benoy, Badal and Dinesh entered in the Writers’ Building. They were dressed in British Costume so that they cannot be identified by the security persons. They entered in the Simsons room and shot dead Simpson. But soon Police captured the whole area and fired on them. The battle of gunfire continued among the police and the three young brave hearts. But soon in front of the massive police force the situation arises that they can be arrested. But the three brave sons of mother India was not ready to surrender themselves in front of British Police. Badal took Potassium Cyanide, Benoy and Dinesh shot themselves with their own revolvers. Badal died on the spot. Binoy was taken to hospital where he died on 13 December 1930. However Dinesh survived from the injuries and hanged on 7th July 1931. Their sacrifice inspired the other patriots for further revolutionary activities in India. The revolutionary poet Kazi Nazrul Islam wrote poem for the patriots like them-

“ফাঁসির মঞ্চে যারা গেয়ে গেল জীবনের জয়গান...

আসি অলক্ষ্যে দাঁড়ায়েছে তারা,

দিবে কোন বলিদান?

আজি পরীক্ষা জাতির

অথবা জাতের করিবে ত্রান...”
